#Guimarães: Don’t forget, you also must see!

Largo do Toural is now considered the heart of the city.  The pavement is in “Calçada à Portuguesa” (traditional-style pavement composed of small flat pieces of different stones and arranged to form a pattern or picture) and the pattern is a faithful copy of plan of the historic center of Guimarães.

Toural Square

Formerly (in the 17th century), it was a square located outside the walls of the medieval village. In fact, it was right next to one of the doors where the cattle fair and market were held.

It worthwhile to stop here a bit to observe the architecture of the facades of the buildings, which border the square, the neighboring streets and the Garden of St. Damasus (Jardim de São Dâmaso).

The wall with the inscription "Here was born Portugal" (“Aqui Nasceu Portugal”) is a symbol of the Independence of Portugal.

Don’t miss! The night illumination of the facades is very attractive for a comfortable walk
