It’s one of the liveliest areas of Barcelona with a bunch of splendid
building ... but guess what? There are many guys that love to stick their
little hand in the wallets of others ... Pickpockets alert!!!
And it is also in the Ramblas that is the most famous market in the
world: Mercat de Sant Josep de Barcelona, popularly known as La Boquería. The
market is an example of the modernist architecture of the time, being the
author the architect Mas Vilà (the works began in 1840).

Why is it called La Boquería?
The
official version states that the name La Boquería derived from goat meat
(“boc” in Catalan), which was sold there by the Jewish community in the 13th
century.
Another version
states that Ramón Berenguer IV returned from his successful conquest of
Almería, showed to the people what he brought … and their jaws dropped when
they saw all the treasures. Thus, Boquería derives from the word “badoquería”
that designates the place where a crown became a little bit silly (“badocs”
in Catalan) and gasp for a while ... and nowadays you gasping for
everything that your eyes see and your nose reaches!
