#Barcelona: Basilica of the Holy Family (La Sagrada Familia)

In process of construction since 1882 (it is expected to be finished in 2026 … fingers crossed!), La Sagrada Familia is undoubtedly the best known work of Gaudí and has become a symbol of Barcelona city.

La Sagrada Familia - Basilica of the Holy Family

Gaudí dedicated much of his life to the construction of the Basilica of the Holy Family and lived the last 15 years of his life in his office in the Basilica. For his dedication, he was buried inside the Basilica in the Chapel of the Carmen. The facade of the Birth and crypt are the only parts that he saw finished and are the two World Heritage.

Sagrada Familia - Facade of Birth

If you pay attention you will see that the stone of the facade of Birth of Christ is darker than the facade of the Passion of Christ, due to the pass of time.

Sagrada Familia - Facades

The facade of the Passion, dedicated to the passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ, began to be built in 1950, being the author the Catalan sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs. His work has raised a lot of controversy, being considered by many as an attempt against Gaudí's work. In 1990, a manisfestation against the continuation of Subirachs’s work was held. Faced with all this discontent, the sculptor simply said: "controversies pass, works remain, a sculptor creates, does not copy."

Sagrada Familia - Facade of the Passion

For the interior of the Basilica, Gaudí planned a "grove" with columns that in some points have 15 meters and in others can reach 75 meters in height. The colorful stained glass windows complete the picture designed by Gaudí, producing an incomparable color.

No doubt! You go up in an elevator, enjoy one of the best views of the city and then down the stairs! The view is more breathtaking than … the stairs!

Which tower to choose for Sagrada Familia?

Of the 18 towers planned, 8 are completed: 4 on the Birth facade and 4 on the Passion facade. Birth facade overlooks the eastern part of the city: the Gothic Quarter, the Aquarium, the Marginal, the Torre Agbar (also known as the Suppository of Barcelona), the Park Güell. The facade of the Passion overlooks the historic center. -»»» I prefer the view of the Birth facade, but it's all a matter of taste!

!!!Attention!!! The normal entrance does not include the tower, so you have to buy the combined ticket “Top Views”.
